Example 3D prints with various proportions of recycled and virgin PLA

In Spring 2022, I worked with a team of students to implement PLA recycling in Olin college by creating and fine-tuning the actual process of recycling Olin students' PLA scraps into filament as well as integrating it into the college’s existing fabrication spaces. We adapted a paper shredded and used a Filabot to successfully turn PLA prints into recycled filament, ready to use. We also produced training materials and guides for the Olin Shop, which takes care of machines (such as 3D printers) available for student use. Starting in Fall 2022, the Olin Shop will recycle students' PLA scraps.
